The Kanino

On this beautiful hiking route, you will walk all the way around the island of wild rabbits, Endelave. Experience the enthralling nature on the cosy holiday island and spot the many rabbits along the way.

Note: In the northernmost part of Endelave, in the natural area of Øvre, there have been challenges with flooding over the past couple of months. You may consider turning inland, where Kongevejen meets the road Øvre (See pink line on the map above).

Welcome to the land of the rabbits

Endelave is the island of rabbits. Thousands of wild rabbits inhabit the little holiday island east of Horsens. You've probably heard about the Camino - you know, the long pilgrimage route in Spain ending in Santiago de Compostela. This route takes its name from the Danish word for rabbit 'kanin'. The 21-kilometre-long hiking route takes you past several of their habitats as well as the most significant nature experiences on the island. The likelihood of seeing Endelave's furry mascot live is quite good. En route you will walk through the more remote parts of the island through preserved nature, away from the island's village and harbour, where the rabbits especially roam.

On a hiking trip at the coast

The majority of the route around Endelave is places close to the coastline. Along the way, you can see all the way to the mainland and the islands of Æbelø, Samsø, Funen and Tunø - and in perfect weather conditions even to Sealand where Copnehagen is. Another strength to the route is the animal life. You will likely see birds, deer, pheasants, wild rabbits and seals.

The Kanino starts and ends at the island's harbuor and is thus well connected to the ferry. In fact, you can't miss the sign at the beginning of the route as you head towards the village. You can choose to head west or east from the start. Either way, you should follow the signs for the blue route if you want to walk the entire 21-kilometer journey.

The Kanino takes you around the island's western, southeastern, and northern tips before returning to the village and harbor. Along the way, you'll pass through areas of quite breathtaking and varied nature. We can highlight the northern part of the island, the protected natural area of Øvre, which with its many beach meadows and heathland has a quite beautiful and characteristic appearance. We recommend leaving the route for a short while to head out to the island's northernmost tip, Øverste Ende, where there is a fine and peaceful beach and a splendid view over the Kattegat.

Is 21 kilometres a bit too much?

Do not despair! You can also try the 12-kilometre-long Mini Kanino or the shorter rabbit route at a distance of 3 kilometres. There are three waymarked routes, so just choose your route colour, follow the signs and go exploring Endelave.

Day trip or overnight stay on the island?

To get to Endelave, you need to take the Endelave ferry from Snaptun on the mainland. The ferry runs several times a day, and the beautiful journey only takes an hour. It's entirely feasible to walk the 21-kilometer route on a day trip, with enough time to catch the ferry back to the mainland. However, if you want to fully experience Endelave and have ample time to relax on the beach, enjoy a meal, or simply hang out in the charming village, you might consider staying overnight at the inn, campground, or one of Endelave's many private accommodations.

Can you cycle the Kanino?

While the hike around Endelave is quite beautiful, the island is also highly recommended for a cycling trip due to its flat landscape with minimal traffic. Unfortunately, you can't follow the entire Kanino route around the island on two wheels, as parts of the route go along the beach. However, on a bike, you can instead follow the green signs for the Mini-Camino on a 12-kilometer round trip around the island. It's possible to rent a bike at the harbour shortly after you disembark from the ferry, but you can also easily bring your own bike onto the ferry.
